Methylergonovine has been approved by the FDA as the generic version of Methergine. Methergine is a brand-name drug that is manufactured by Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Methergine is given to the mother just after she gives birth to a child to help deliver the placenta. Methergine is also used to help control bleeding and to improve muscle tone in the uterus after childbirth. This prescription drug belongs to a group of drugs called ergot alkaloids. The active ingredient found in Methergine is methylergonovine maleate and it works by affecting the smooth muscle of a woman's uterus, improving the muscle tone as well as the strength and timing of uterine contractions.
The Methergine injection is injected into a muscle or through Intravenous therapy (IV), into a vein. Normally, you may receive this injection while you are in the delivery room and for a short time after your baby is born if needed. Methergine also comes in the form of a tablet taken by mouth 3 or four times daily for up to one week after your baby is born.
Follow all directions on your prescription label. You should not use Methergine if high blood pressure, toxemia of pregnancy, liver or kidney disease, or if your baby has not yet been born. Do not breast-feed your child within 12 hours after taking Methergine.
Some—but not all—side effects of Methergine include headache, nausea, vomiting, or dizziness may occur. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but serious side effects occur: chest pain, vision changes, confusion, seizures. Tell your healthcare provider about all your side effects and remember to report negative side effects to the FDA.
