Miebo is an ophthalmic solution, or eye drop, used to treat the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease in adults. Dry eye disease is when the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly, causing symptoms like dryness, irritation, and discomfort. Miebo is not approved for use in individuals under the age of 18 years.
Miebo is made by the pharmaceutical company Bausch & Lomb Inc. The active ingredient in Miebo is called perfluorohexyloctane. Although the exact way Miebo works is not completely understood, it is thought to help by reducing tear evaporation.
The usual dose of Miebo is one drop in the affected eye(s) four times daily. However, your healthcare provider will tell you exactly how you should use Miebo. Follow their instructions carefully.
You should not use Miebo while you have contact lenses in. Take out your contact lenses before putting in this medicine, and wait at least 30 minutes after administering the eye drops before putting contact lenses back in.
Store Miebo at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children.
Before starting treatment with Miebo, tell your healthcare provider about your medical history and any medical conditions you have, including if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Although Miebo does not have any documented drug interactions, it is a good idea to tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and vitamins or supplements.
In clinical trials, the most common side effects of Miebo were blurred vision and red eyes, which occurred in up to 3% of patients using Miebo.
Although it is rare to have an allergy to Miebo if you are using Miebo and you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, get emergency medical help. Symptoms may include hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Other side effects may occur. Consult your healthcare professional for any questions and more information about side effects.
Miebo and Restasis treat dry eye disease but work differently. Miebo reduces inflammation and may provide quicker symptom relief, while Restasis increases tear production and reduces chronic inflammation. Consult your healthcare provider for more information and personalized medical advice on the best treatment.
