Movantik is a prescription drug that is used to treat opioid-induced constipation. Opioids are a drug class of pain relievers that are prescribed to treat chronic and/or severe pain.
Opioid-induced constipation is a side effect of using certain opioid medications such as oxycodone, codeine, morphine, or fentanyl. When taken, opioids attach themselves to several neurotransmitters to block pain. However, opioids can also attach themselves to receptors in the bowels which can result in opioid-induced constipation. When taken, Movantik helps you to pass stool easily by blocking opioids from attaching to your bowel receptors.
Before taking Movantik, you should talk to your healthcare provider to decide if this will be the right drug to treat your constipation condition. If you were previously taking laxatives to reduce constipation, you should stop using those drugs before switching to Movantik. Movantik should only be taken if you are using an opioid. If you have stopped using your opioid medication, you should also stop using Movantik, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
Take Movantik on an empty stomach. Healthcare professionals have recommended to patients to avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking Movantik. Your healthcare provider would provide you with medical advice on dosage instructions and proper safety instructions.
Some serious side effects of Movantik include opioid withdrawal and severe stomach pain or diarrhea. Opioid withdrawal can cause sweating, chills, anxiety, and irritability. There are other Movantik side effects that are not listed here. If you experience any of these listed side effects or any other concerning effects, you should consult your healthcare professional for medical advice.
