The active ingredient in Nebupent, pentamidine, belongs to a class of drugs called antiprotozoals. It is normally used to treat infections by single-celled parasites (protozoa), such as sleeping sickness, but it also effective against Pneumocystis jiroveci, the bacteria that causes pneumocystis pneumonia, or PJP.
Nebupent is prescribed to high-risk HIV/AIDS patients, either people who have already had one PJP infection or one whose immune system is seriously compromised by the HIV infection.
Nebupent is inhaled through a Respirgard II nebulizer. It may be administered by a healthcare professional at a clinic or hospital or administered at home after instruction by a healthcare professional.
