What is Oracea?

Oracea contains doxycycline, which belongs to the tetracycline antibiotic class of drugs. It is a prescription drug that is approved for the treatment of inflammatory lesions, such as blemishes, acne-like bumps, and pustules caused by rosacea. Oracea does not reduce the redness caused by rosacea. Oracea has anti-inflammatory properties and works by reducing inflammation of the skin that is caused by rosacea.

Oracea should not be used in children under eight years old. Consult a healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as Oracea may harm an unborn baby or breastfeeding child. If Oracea is used with birth control pills, it may cause your pills to become less effective. Use a second form of contraception while taking Oracea.

What doses of Oracea are available?

Oracea is available as a 40 mg oral capsule that is typically taken once daily in the morning at least one hour before or two hours after a meal. This medication should only be used as prescribed by a doctor or healthcare provider and for the entire duration of the treatment. Consult your healthcare provider for the appropriate dosage and medical advice on how to take Oracea. In case of an accidental overdose, seek emergency medical attention.

What are the side effects of Oracea?

Oracea may cause unwanted side effects. The most common side effects of Oracea include:

  • Upset stomach or stomach pain

  • Diarrhea

  • Sore throat or nose

  • Sinus or fungal infection

  • Flu-like symptoms

  • High blood pressure

  • Changes in blood tests

Serious side effects may include severe headaches, permanent teeth discoloration, intestinal infections, darkening or discoloration of the skin, and immune system reactions. In addition, Oracea may cause allergic reactions, which may warrant immediate medical attention. Signs of an allergic reaction may include rash, hives, and difficulty breathing.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult a healthcare provider for other possible side effects, drug interactions, and precautions.

What is the half-life of Oracea?

The half-life of Oracea averages around 16 to 22 hours, but this can vary among individuals. In other words, it takes about 16 to 22 hours for half of the medication to be eliminated from your bloodstream. The time it takes for the drug to be completely out of your system would generally be four to five times this half-life duration.

How long should I take Oracea for rosacea?

Oracea is typically prescribed for no longer than 16 weeks. It is not known whether Oracea is effective when used for longer than 16 weeks. It is also unknown whether Oracea is safe when used for over nine months. The length of treatment will vary depending on your healthcare provider's guidance. Always follow your doctor's instructions when taking Oracea.

Is there a generic of Oracea?

Doxycycline is the generic version of Oracea. Various pharmaceutical manufacturers, including Prasco Laboratories and Mayne Pharma, produce the generic version of Oracea.
