Cequa is a brand-name prescription eye drops medication that increases tear production in patients with dry eye due to swelling.
The active ingredient in Cequa, cyclosporine, is an immunosuppressant. Exactly how cyclosporine helps to increase tear production is not completely understood, but it is believed to either reduce swelling around the tear glands or reduce the accumulation of white blood cells in the tear glands.
Cequa is taken as a single drop in each eye every 12 hours. Cequa can be used with artificial tears provided there is a 15-minute interval between use. The effects on tear production may take three to six months to be noticed.
The most common physical side effects of Cequa are site reactions and include pain (about 1 in 4 patients), redness, itching, irritation, and discharge. Other side effects might include dizziness and nausea. This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, consult with your doctor.
