Potassium Chloride is a prescription drug primarily used to prevent or to treat hypokalemia. Hypokalemia occurs when the blood's potassium levels are too low. Potassium is an important electrolyte for nerve and muscle cell functioning, especially for muscle cells in the heart. Your kidneys control your body's potassium levels, allowing for excess potassium to leave the body through urine or sweat. Signs like muscle cramps and spasms, digestive problems, tingling, and numbness can be indications that your potassium levels are low. Conditions such as severe prolonged diarrhea and vomiting, hormone problems such as hyperaldosteronism, or treatment with "water pills"/diuretics can lower your body's potassium levels as well. Normally people get enough potassium from a healthy diet. Those who can not use supplements like Potassium Chloride.
To make sure Potassium Chloride is safe for you to use, tell your healthcare provider if you've ever had kidney disease, cirrhosis or other liver diseases, an adrenal gland disorder, a large tissue injury such as a severe burn, severe dehydration, diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, stomach or intestinal bleeding, a blockage in your stomach or intestines, or chronic diarrhea (such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease).
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, stomach pain, or the appearance of a potassium chloride tablet in your stool are some side effects you may experience while using Potassium Chloride.
Though rare, some people may experience an allergic reaction to Potassium Chloride. Seek emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to potassium chloride: hives, difficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You can report additional side effects you experience to the FDA.
