What is Prevident 5000: Uses, Warnings & Interactions

Colgate’s Prevident 5000 is a prescription toothpaste that contains a high dose of sodium fluoride (1.1%). As with other toothpastes, dentists prescribe Prevident 5000 or similar products to prevent tooth decay and cavities (dental caries). Prevident 5000 should only be used once daily unless a dentist instructs otherwise, though some Prevident 5000 products are meant to be used twice daily. The best time to brush with Prevident 5000 is right before bedtime.

How to take Prevident 5000

  • Follow all the dentist’s instructions.

  • Use Prevident 5000 only once per day, usually at the end of the day.

  • Prevident 5000 Enamel Protect or Prevident 5000 Sensitive also contain potassium nitrate for sensitivity and tooth whitening. 

    • Use these products twice daily, once in the morning and once at night.

  • The prescriber may instruct you to brush more than once daily with Prevident 5000.

  • Apply a thin strip of Prevident 5000 on the toothbrush.

  • Brush for two minutes.

  • Brush for one minute if you are using Prevident 5000 Enamel Protect or Prevident 5000 Sensitive.

  • Spit out the toothpaste. Do not swallow.

  • Do not eat, drink, or rinse for 30 minutes after brushing.

  • Children should rinse their mouths immediately after use and spit out the rinse.

  • Store Prevident 5000 at room temperature.

What to do if you miss a dose of Prevident 5000

  • Ask the prescriber what to do in case a dose is missed. 

  • Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Prevident 5000 contraindications

  • You should not use Prevident 5000 in children younger than 6 years of age unless recommended by a dentist. 

  • Do not use Prevident 5000 Enamel Protect or Prevident 5000 Sensitive in children younger than 12 years of age unless recommended by a dentist.

  • Do not use Prevident 5000 if you have had an allergic reaction to the product.

Prevident 5000 warnings

  • Tell the dentist or prescriber if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have allergies.

    • Pregnant or breastfeeding women may want to get medical advice from their doctor.

  • Do not swallow Prevident 5000 toothpaste or gel.

    • Ingesting large amounts of this toothpaste can cause serious side effects.

    • If a small amount is eaten (less than 5 mg sodium fluoride/kg of body weight), particularly by a child, ingesting milk or other foods rich in soluble calcium will help prevent side effects.

    • If large amounts are eaten, induce vomiting, supply soluble calcium (like milk), and get medical attention.

    • For extremely large overdoses (more than 15 mg sodium fluoride/kg), induce vomiting and go to an emergency room. One full container of Prevident 5000 Kids contains 605 mg of sodium fluoride.

  • If Denta 5000 Plus is prescribed to a child younger than 6, that child will require supervision when they brush with Denta 5000 Plus to prevent swallowing during brushing.

    • An adult should also supervise children younger than 12 to prevent swallowing.

  • Too much fluoride can cause white patches or stains on your teeth. If this happens, stop using the medicine and call the prescriber.

Contact a healthcare provider or get medical attention if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Tooth discoloration

  • Overdose: Burning in the mouth, sore tongue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, excess salivation, stomach pain or cramping, vomiting blood

  • Allergic reactions: Itching, hives, rash, swelling of the mouth, lips, or tongue
