Colgate’s Prevident 5000 is a prescription toothpaste that contains a high dose of sodium fluoride (1.1%). As with other toothpastes, dentists prescribe Prevident 5000 or similar products to prevent tooth decay and cavities (dental caries). Prevident 5000 should only be used once daily unless a dentist instructs otherwise, though some Prevident 5000 products are meant to be used twice daily. The best time to brush with Prevident 5000 is right before bedtime.

Ingesting large amounts of this toothpaste can cause serious side effects.
If a small amount is eaten (less than 5 mg sodium fluoride/kg of body weight), particularly by a child, ingesting milk or other foods rich in soluble calcium will help prevent side effects.
If large amounts are eaten, induce vomiting, supply soluble calcium (like milk), and get medical attention.
For extremely large overdoses (more than 15 mg sodium fluoride/kg), induce vomiting and go to an emergency room. One full container of Prevident 5000 Kids contains 605 mg of sodium fluoride.
If Denta 5000 Plus is prescribed to a child younger than 6, that child will require supervision when they brush with Denta 5000 Plus to prevent swallowing during brushing.
An adult should also supervise children younger than 12 to prevent swallowing.
Too much fluoride can cause white patches or stains on your teeth. If this happens, stop using the medicine and call the prescriber.
When used topically as prescribed, Prevident 5000 has no serious drug interactions.
