Prevymis is a brand-name prescription drug that prevents cytomegalovirus infections in patients who have recently had a bone marrow transplant who also test positive for cytomegalovirus (CMV).
Cytomegalovirus is a herpes virus that is very common—almost everyone (about 80%) will get a CMV infection at some time in their lives. Most CMV infections do not cause symptoms, but the virus can reactivate in immune-compromised patients, including patients with bone marrow transplants, and have serious and life-threatening effects.
Prevymis is intended to stop reactivated CMV virus in patients who have recently had a bone marrow transplant. The active ingredient in Prevymis, letermovir, prevents the growth and proliferation of cytomegalovirus by blocking the virus's ability to replicate and produce more virus particles.
Prevymis is taken as a tablet or intravenous infusion daily for the first 100 days after a bone marrow transplant.
The most common side effects of Prevymis include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, headache, cough, abdominal pain, swelling, and fatigue. People who have Prevymis administered as an intravenous infusion will most likely experience site reactions to the injection, as well, including bleeding, bruising, soreness, and swelling. Allergic reactions are possible but very rare. Get emergency medical help if you experience allergic reactions such as rash, itching, hives, or trouble breathing.
