Promacta is a brand-name prescription drug that increases blood platelet production in patients with low platelet counts due to various causes. Platelets are the cells primarily responsible for blood clotting, so low blood platelets leave patients vulnerable to bleeding and bruising. The active ingredient in Promacta, eltrombopag, activates bone marrow to produce blood platelets. Promacta costs $25,421.54 at full price. A SingleCare Promacta coupon reduces that price to $7,345.17.

Promacta is a brand-name prescription drug with the active ingredient eltrombopag. Generic eltrombopag is not available at this time.
Promacta is a brand-name prescription drug that increases blood platelet production in patients with low platelet counts due to chronic immune thrombocytopenia (CTP), to hepatitis C infections, or to aplastic anemia. Platelets are the cells primarily responsible for blood clotting, so low blood platelets leave patients vulnerable to bleeding and bruising.
CTP is an autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system “misfires” and attacks and kills blood platelets as if they were an infection. Aplastic anemia is a condition in which blood cell production in general—red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets—goes down. Aplastic anemia often requires blood transfusions or bone marrow transplants. Finally, hepatitis C reduces blood platelet counts by damaging the liver, which then causes blood to back up in the spleen, particularly platelets. Often, if medications cannot solve the problem, the spleen has to be surgically removed.
The active ingredient in Promacta, eltrombopag attaches to a receptor in bone marrow cells that “switches them on” to start producing platelets.
Promacta is a tablet taken once daily. It is discontinued after four weeks if platelet counts are unaffected.
Promacta increases platelets in the body. These are the cells responsible for blood clotting. So the most serious side effects of Promacta are caused by unwanted blood clots: stroke, blood clots in the stomach, blood clots in the leg, and blood clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism). Promacta may also cause liver problems or anemia.
The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, urinary tract infection, upper respiratory tract infection, flu symptoms, insomnia, hair loss, muscle pain, and weakness. Although allergic reactions are rare, they are still possible. Watch for rash, itching, or trouble breathing.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Consult with your prescribing physician and pharmacist about possible side effects before starting on Promacta.
