There is no generic version of filgrastim, the active ingredient in Zarxio. It is, however, available as a biologically similar drug in other high-priced brand-name prescription drugs, such as Neulasta, manufactured by Amgen, or Udencya, manufactured by Coherus BioSciences.
Zarxio is an injectable prescription bone marrow stimulant. Its active ingredient is a man-made protein (filgrastim) that stimulates the bone marrow to make white blood cells (neutrophils) that are critical in fighting infections. It is taken by patients undergoing cancer treatments which weaken the body's ability to produce white blood cells thus putting them at risk for infections.
Zarxio is sometimes administered by a healthcare provider as an IV, but is more often self-injected by the patient or a caregiver on a daily basis using a prefilled syringe.
The most common side effects of Zarxio include, but are not limited to, fever, nosebleeds, bone pain, hair loss, diarrhea, nausea, headache, numbness, and insomnia. Allergic reactions to Zarxio are rare but serious, such as trouble breathing and anaphylactic shock. Mood and mental changes have not been reported for Zarxio.
