Questran Light is a generic version of a brand-name prescription drug from Bristol-Myers Squibbs, but has been discontinued. Generic cholestyramine light is also available from Eon Labs.
Questran Light is a low-calorie version of Questran, a prescription drug used to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood in patients who have not succeeded in reducing cholesterol by modifying their diet alone.
The active ingredient in Questran Light, cholestyramine, belongs to a class of drugs called bile acid sequestrants that work by preventing the intestines from reabsorbing and reusing bile acid, as would normally happen. Bile acid is made from the same molecule as cholesterol, so removing bile acid from the body requires the liver to make more bile acid. As a result, the body makes less cholesterol, reducing cholesterol in the bloodstream.
Questran Light comes in packets that each contain 5 grams of powder (4 grams of cholestyramine). Questran Light is mixed with water. Two to four packets are taken daily.
The most common side effects of Questran Light include, but are not limited to, constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, gas, bloating, hiccups, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight changes, muscle pain, joint pain, dizziness, vertigo, and ringing in the ears. Allergic reactions to Questran Light are rare. They include hives, swelling, and trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur.
