Recombivax HB is a brand-name drug manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc. A generic version of this vaccine is not available for commercial use.
Recombivax HB is a prescription drug indicated for the prevention of infection caused by all known subtypes of hepatitis B virus and has been approved for use in children, teens, and adults. Hepatitis B is a life-threatening disease caused by a virus. Hepatitis B causes inflammation of the liver, vomiting, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). Hepatitis B infection can lead to liver cancer, cirrhosis, or death. This disease is spread through blood or bodily fluids, sex with an infected person or sharing IV drug needles with an infected person, or during childbirth when a baby is born to an infected mother.
This vaccine works by exposing your immune system to a small amount of the virus, which causes the body to develop immunity to the disease. It should be noted that Recombivax HB will not treat an active infection that has already developed in the body. However, like any vaccine, this vaccine may not provide protection from disease in every person. Additionally, the hepatitis B vaccine will not protect against infection with hepatitis A, C, and E, or other viruses that affect the liver as well. It may also not protect against hepatitis B if your child is already infected with the virus, even if he or she does not yet show symptoms.
Common side effects reported to accompany Recombivax HB include diarrhea, loss of appetite, feeling weak or tired, mild fussiness or crying (in children), low fever, or runny nose.
Call your healthcare provider right away if you notice you have a high fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash, fussiness, irritability, crying for an hour or longer, unusual muscle weakness, changes in behavior, orsevere skin reaction at the injection site.
The side effects listed here are not all the effects Recombivax HB patients may experience. Seek medical advice from your doctor regarding other side effects that may occur while using Recombivax HB.
