What is Repatha SureClick: Uses, Warnings & Interactions

Repatha SureClick is a single-dose autoinjector containing a brand-name antibody medication (Repatha) that lowers cholesterol. Repatha can also be injected with single-dose syringes or an on-body infusion device. For most high cholesterol conditions, Repatha doses are injected once every two weeks, but severe hereditary high cholesterol may require high-dose monthly injections. Repatha has no serious side effects other than allergic reactions.

What is Repatha SureClick used for?

Repatha SureClick is an autoinjector pen that contains a biologic drug (Repatha) that is FDA-approved to lower LDL cholesterol in adults with high cholesterol (primary hyperlipidemia) or in adults or children with hereditary high cholesterol. Clinicians also prescribe Repatha to people with cardiovascular disease and normal cholesterol levels to prevent cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, and blood vessel problems.

What are common Repatha SureClick doses?

  • For high cholesterol in adults: 140 mg subcutaneous injection administered every two weeks

  • For risk reduction in adults with cardiovascular disease: 140 mg subcutaneous injection administered every two weeks

  • For heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in children 10 years of age and older: 140 mg subcutaneous injection administered every two weeks

  • For homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in adults and children 10 years of age and older: 420 mg subcutaneous injection (three injections administered 30 minutes apart) administered every four weeks (or every two weeks if necessary)

How to take Repatha SureClick

  • Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose and tell you how often it should be given.

  • Please read the Patient Information sheet before starting this medication.

  • The SureClick autoinjector injects one dose of Repatha under the skin.

    • Do not use the SureClick injection pen more than once.

  • Always check the SureClick injector before using it. Do not use it if the medicine is cloudy, the device is damaged, parts are missing, or the expiration date has passed.

    • Do not use the SureClick injector pen if you drop it.

    • Do not shake the injector pen.

  • A healthcare provider will demonstrate how to give injections. Make sure you understand all instructions before giving yourself an injection. 

  • You will be shown the body areas where this shot can be given: 

    • Self-administered injections can be given on the thigh or abdomen.

    • A caregiver can administer an injection in the outer area of the upper arm. 

    • Use a different body area for each injection. 

    • Do not inject into skin with cuts, scrapes, scars, or stretch marks.

  • Always clean the injection area with an alcohol wipe before injecting the medicine.

  • To give an injection: 

    • Review the Instructions for Use that are included in the carton.

    • Remove the SureClick autoinjector from the refrigerator.

    • Allow the autoinjector to get to room temperature, letting it warm for at least 30 minutes.

    • Pull the orange cap off the injector when ready to inject.

    • Stretch or pull the skin to provide an injection surface.

    • Place the yellow safety guard at the end of the injector against the skin surface at a 90-degree angle.

    • Without pressing the gray button, push the injector down until it can’t move anymore.

    • Press the gray button. It will make a clicking sound.

    • The injection takes 15 seconds. Keep the injector pushed firmly against the skin during the injection. 

    • When the window turns yellow, the injection is finished.

    • Remove the injector and dispose of it in a sharps container.

  • For 420 mg injections, use three SureClick pens to give three injections one after another.

    • All three injections must be completed in 30 minutes.

  • Store this medicine in its original carton in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.

  • The medicine can be stored at room temperature for up to 30 days. Dispose of any unused SureClick pens after that.

  • Never allow the Repatha SureClick pen to sit in direct sunlight.

What to do if you miss a dose of Repatha SureClick

  • A missed biweekly dose can be taken seven days after its scheduled time. 

  • If more than seven days have passed, skip the missed dose.

  • Take the next dose on its scheduled day.

  • A missed monthly dose can be taken seven days after its scheduled time. Take the next dose on its scheduled day.

  • If more than seven days have passed, take the missed dose, but reschedule the next dose for 30 days after the missed dose was injected.

Repatha SureClick contraindications

  • This medicine is not right for everyone. 

  • Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to evolocumab.

Repatha SureClick warnings

  • Make sure other doctors or other healthcare professionals treating you know about your Repatha injections. 

  • The prescriber will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

  • Before starting Repatha, tell the prescriber about all your medical conditions, particularly latex allergies.

  • Tell the prescriber if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Repatha can cause serious allergic reactions. If you experience an allergic reaction, stop using Repatha and talk to the prescriber.

  • Tell the prescriber about all the medications and supplements you take or plan to take.

  • Tell other healthcare providers about Repatha before they prescribe a new medication.

Serious side effects

Talk to a doctor if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Allergic reaction: Rash, itching, hives, skin redness, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, or arms

Less serious side effects

  • Runny nose

  • Sore throat

  • Cold symptoms

  • High blood sugar (in people with cardiovascular disease)

  • Back pain

  • Injection site reactions (pain, itching, burning, swelling)
