What is Revlimid?

Revlimid is a chemotherapy drug approved to treat multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells, in combination with a steroid called dexamethasone. In multiple myeloma, cancerous and immature plasma cells build up in the bone marrow and eventually compromise the body’s ability to fight infections. Revlimid is also approved to treat transfusion-dependent anemia caused by a certain type of myelodysplastic syndrome. Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of cancers of the bone marrow in which the bone marrow does not produce mature or functioning blood cells. Revlimid may be used to treat mantle cell lymphoma that has relapsed or progressed after using a previous treatment, including bortezomib. Mantle cell lymphoma is a cancer of B lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, that starts in the lymph nodes. The cancerous B lymphocytes divide uncontrollably and eventually cause tumors in the lymph nodes and bone marrow. Revlimid is approved to treat follicular lymphoma and marginal zone lymphoma, in combination with rituximab. The active ingredient in Revlimid, lenalidomide, works against cancer in three main ways. As an anti-cancer agent, lenalidomide directly kills cancer cells. Lenalidomide may also activate certain white blood cells to kill tumor cells. Finally, lenalidomide may prevent the growth of blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients to the tumor. Revlimid is usually taken as an oral capsule once daily on certain days of a 28-day cycle. For example, in combination with dexamethasone, Revlimid is taken daily for 21 days and stopped for seven days during a 28-day cycle. Depending on the severity of the electrolyte imbalance, signs and symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, kidney problems, kidney failure, seizures, heart problems, or death. In addition, serious skin or allergic reactions are possible with Revlimid. Skin reactions may include Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which can be life-threatening without treatment. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, such as fever, sore throat, swelling, itching, or rash, and consult with your doctor immediately. Revlimid may cause harm to an unborn baby.
