What is Rotateq?

Rotateq is an FDA-approved prescription vaccine used to prevent rotavirus infection in infants and young children. Rotavirus can cause fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. The most severe cases occur in children between 6 to 24 months old. This medication may not fully protect your child from rotavirus, and it will not help if your child already has the virus. This vaccine helps the body produce immunity to prevent infection with rotavirus or to lessen the severity of an infection.

Rotateq is available as an oral solution and is usually administered by a healthcare professional, usually two or three separate doses. These doses are given at least four to ten weeks apart. For maximum effectiveness, it is important to receive all scheduled doses.

This vaccine is usually given at the same time as other vaccines. For up to 15 days after receiving the RotaTeq vaccine, your child should avoid coming into contact with anyone who has a weak immune system. There is a chance that the virus could be passed from the child to that person. Your child should not get Rotateq if he or she has Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease (SCID), HIV/AIDS, or other immune-deficiency conditions.

What are the side effects of Rotateq?

Rotateq vaccine may cause mild fever, diarrhea, or vomiting. Tell your doctor right away if your child experiences a persistent high fever greater than 102 degrees F.

Though it may be rare, this vaccine may cause a serious intestinal problem in babies, known as intussusception. This condition occurs when a part of the intestine gets blocked or twisted. The risk of this occurring may be higher within 21 days after receiving the first dose of rotavirus vaccine. Get medical help right away if you notice symptoms such as bloody stools or sudden severe abdominal pain.
