Simponi Aria is a brand-name prescription drug that is not available in a generic version.
Simponi Aria is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, active psoriatic arthritis, and active ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis of the spine). These are all arthritic conditions in which the body's immune system “misfires” and mistakenly attacks cells in the joints, causing swelling, stiffness, and pain.
The active ingredient in Simponi Aria, golimumab, interferes with the chemicals that “signal” the immune system to mount an attack, so the result is a slowing down or suppression of the immune system.
Methotrexate, another drug that suppresses the immune system, is often prescribed with Simponi Aria to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
Simponi Aria is administered as an IV infusion by a healthcare provider. Simponi Aria is the only Simponi formulation that can be administered intravenously.
Simponi Aria suppresses the immune system and sometimes lowers white blood cell counts, the first line of defense against infections. So Simponi Aria lowers the body's ability to prevent or fight infections, putting patients at a higher risk of infections, including severe and life-threatening infections. Patients with active infections, particularly tuberculosis or hepatitis B, should not take Simponi Aria unless approved by the prescribing physician. Simponi Aria may lead to the reactivation of these infections even if they are latent. Immune suppression also increases the risk of certain types of cancer, such as skin cancer or lymphoma.
Other side effects include high blood pressure, blood thinning, liver damage, malignant growths, multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome (the immune system attacks peripheral nerves), heart failure, and skin rash. Allergic reactions are rare but can be severe and include lupus type syndromes.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Consult with your prescribing physician and pharmacist about possible side effects before starting on Simponi Aria.
