What is Stivarga?

Stivarga is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat metastatic colorectal cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, or a specific type of liver cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma or HCC. Colorectal cancer is a cancer of the linings of the colon and rectum. “Metastatic” means that cancer has spread to other parts of the intestines and body. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are “soft tissue” cancers of the gastrointestinal system that can appear anywhere from the throat to the rectum, but occur most commonly in the stomach and small intestine. They are cancers of the nerve cells that line the digestive system walls. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common form of liver cancer and usually occurs in people with chronic liver problems, such as hepatitis infections. The active ingredient in Stivarga, regorafenib, is a type of anti-cancer drug called a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It is believed that, in many cancers, the uncontrolled cancer cell growth is caused by a set of proteins—the tyrosine kinases that “tell” the cell to divide—are stuck in the “on” position. Cancer cells divide and grow when they shouldn't. Regorafenib works by blocking these proteins and reversing the growth of tumors Stivarga is taken as a capsule once a day for 21 days with a seven-day break afterward. The 28-day cycle is continued until it is no longer working or until the patient can no longer safely take Stivarga.
