What is Symfi?
Symfi is a brand-name prescription combination drug used to control the underlying viral infection that causes HIV/AIDS. Symfi combines three prescription drugs – efavirenz, lamivudine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate – that reduce HIV in the body by blocking a critical protein that HIV needs to make copies of itself.
HIV targets the body's immune system. As the infection progresses, patients become vulnerable to serious and ultimately life-threatening secondary infections and cancers. Symfi reduces the amount of HIV in the body and gives the immune system the chance to recover.
Symfi is taken as a fixed-dose tablet once a day on an empty stomach and preferably at bedtime. Symfi is not prescribed to patients with kidney failure, liver damage, or a hepatitis B infection.
What are the side effects of Symfi?
The most common side effects of Symfi are headache, dizziness, feeling tired, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, and pain. A number of serious side effects are associated with Symfi including liver damage, kidney impairment, pancreas problems, nervous system problems, and a potentially lethal buildup of lactic acid in the body (lactic acidosis).
Mental and mood changes include trouble concentrating, depression, and abnormal dreams. Serious psychiatric side effects are also associated with Symfi and include severe depression, suicidal thoughts, suicidal attempts, aggression, paranoia, and mania. Allergic reactions are rare but can include Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a dangerous and potentially fatal skin reaction. Discontinue Symfi if any allergic symptoms, such as rash, swelling, or trouble breathing, are experienced.
