Lo Loestrin Fe is an oral contraceptive that contains a combination of two hormones: norethindrone acetate (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (estrogen). This type of birth control mainly works by stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries (ovulation).
In addition to preventing pregnancy, birth control may help regulate menstruation and make periods less painful. Birth control may also help decrease the risk of ovarian cysts. Your healthcare provider may also prescribe birth control for other reasons, such as the treatment of acne.
Note: Like all birth control, Lo Loestrin Fe does not protect you or your partner from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Lo Loestrin Fe is available as an oral tablet. In each 28-day supply pack, there are 24 blue active tablets containing 1 mg of norethindrone and 10 mcg of ethinyl estradiol, two white active tablets containing 10 mcg of ethinyl estradiol, and two brown inactive tablets containing ferrous fumarate. The inactive tablets are taken during the fourth week of the pack while you're on your period. The inactive pills help maintain the habit of taking one tablet every day at the same time.
You should use an additional form of birth control, like condoms, if you take a birth control pill at a different time of day than usual, if you miss a dose, or if you start a new pack late. You may be able to obtain a 3-month prescription fill to avoid starting a new pack late.
If this is your first time taking birth control or if you are switching to Lo Loestrin Fe from a different type of hormonal birth control, follow your doctor's medical advice to avoid pregnancy when starting your first pack.
If you experience vomiting or diarrhea within three to four hours after taking birth control, follow the instructions for a missed dosage. These directions can be found in your medication guide.
The most common side effects of Lo Loestrin Fe are nausea, vomiting, headache, irregular bleeding, menstrual pain, breast tenderness, acne, abdominal pain, anxiety, and depression. Other side effects of Lo Loestrin Fe may include acne, changes in sexual desire (libido), high blood sugar, high cholesterol levels, depression, and problems tolerating contact lenses. Weight changes can also occur with Lo Loestrin Fe, including weight fluctuations and weight gain. Tell your doctor if these or other side effects persist or worsen.
Serious side effects of Lo Loestrin Fe include serious blood clots in the legs, lungs, heart, or brain. Complications from blood clots include heart attack and stroke. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion, sudden sweating, or fainting. Other serious side effects of Lo Loestrin Fe may include serious allergic reactions, high blood pressure, gallbladder issues, and liver tumors.
Talk with your healthcare provider about other possible side effects of Lo Loestrin Fe.
