Temodar is a brand-name prescription drug used as the initial treatment and maintenance for certain types of brain cancers (glioblastoma and astrocytoma). Temodar is started after tumors have been surgically removed and is administered along with radiation therapy to eliminate any residual cancer cells. For astrocytoma, a cancer where the brain and spinal cord tumors are made up of star-shaped cancer cells, Temodar is started only after treatment with nitrosourea and procarbazine has not succeeded in stopping the growth of the cancer.
Temodar is taken as a capsule or infusion.
Common side effects of Temodar include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mouth sores, weakness, dizziness, feeling tired, blurred vision, coughing, headache, bruising, bleeding, hair loss, and insomnia. Severe side effects include seizures, liver problems, and low white blood cell counts, which can put the patient at risk for infection. Mental and mood changes may include confusion and memory problems. Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, such as fever, sore throat, itching, rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, and seek emergency medical treatment right away if these symptoms occur.
