Tiglutik is a brand-name prescription drug that slows the progress of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Tiglutik is the only riluzole medication taken as an oral solution for patients who are unable to swallow a tablet. Generic riluzole oral solution is not available.
Tiglutik is a brand-name prescription drug that treats amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), a condition that kills the brain and spinal neurons that control voluntary muscles, called motor neurons. ALS nerve death is caused by glutamate, the most common substance in the brain for transmitting signals between nerve cells. In excess, glutamate is toxic to nerve cells.
Tiglutik slows the process of neuron death by blocking release of glutamate. Tiglutik does not reverse or stop ALS or reverse motor neuron damage.
Tiglutik is administered as an oral solution to patients who are unable to swallow a tablet. Because Tiglutik only slows down the progress of the condition, patients and caregivers will not notice any improvements in the condition.
The most common physical side effects of Tiglutik include difficulty breathing, numbness, tingling, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, runny nose, loss of appetite, fast heartbeat, chest pain, muscle stiffness, swelling, burning feeling in the mouth, and weakness. Serious side effects include high blood pressure, liver problems, and low white blood cell counts, creating a higher risk of infection. Allergic reactions are rare and include swelling, itching, rash, and shortness of breath. This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
