What is Tolmetin?

Tolmetin is used to treat pain or inflammation caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. It is also used to treat juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in children who are at least 2 years old.

Tolmetin is a member of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) drug class. NSAIDs are a group of medicines that relieve pain and fever and reduce inflammation. NSAIDs like Tolmetin work by blocking a specific group of enzymes called cyclo-oxygenase enzymes. These enzymes are responsible for the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are a group of compounds with hormone-like effects that control many different processes such as inflammation, blood flow, and the formation of blood clots.
