What is Scopolamine?

Scopolamine is a patch that is worn on a hairless area of skin behind the ear and works for three days. Scopolamine can be used in adults to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness. Scopolamine is also prescribed to adults to prevent nausea and vomiting after certain types of surgery or anesthesia. Scopolamine is a generic medicine and is often referred to by the brand name, Transderm-Scop.

Scopolamine is not approved in children or teenagers under the age of 18 years old. However, some healthcare providers prescribe this medicine off-label (for a use that is not approved by the FDA) in adolescents who are 12 years or older to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness or to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery.

Wash your hands with soap and water and dry your hands after handling the patches. The medication should not come into contact with your eyes. Never cut the patch. Only one patch should be worn at any time. Always remember to remove and discard the patch before putting on a new patch.

What are the side effects of Scopolamine?

The most common side effects of Scopolamine are dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, blurred vision, dilated pupils, confusion, disorientation, sore throat, and redness where the patch is placed. It may also cause difficulty urinating and emptying the bladder.

Serious side effects may occur, such as:

  • Serious psychiatric reactions (patients should be monitored for changes in mood and behavior)

  • Seizures

  • Heat stroke

  • Angle-closure glaucoma/sudden increased eye pressure (take off the patch and call your healthcare provider right away if you have eye pain, redness, or vision changes)

Seek emergency medical help if you have symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

How long does Scopolamine stay in your system after you remove the patch?

After you remove the patch, if you do not put on another one, the effects of the medication scopolamine can last anywhere from several days to several weeks.

  • Alcohol

  • Anti-anxiety medication

  • Medication that helps you sleep

  • Seizure medications such as phenobarbital

If the combination cannot be avoided, the patient should be closely monitored.

Also, Scopolamine should not be taken with solid dosage forms of potassium, such as potassium capsules or tablets.

Scopolamine is an anticholinergic medication (it blocks a substance called acetylcholine), so check with your healthcare provider if you use any other anticholinergic medications such as allergy or cold medicine, medicines that treat bowel or bladder spasms, certain asthma medications, or other motion sickness medicines.

  • Have angle-closure glaucoma

  • Have severe preeclampsia

There are certain conditions where the healthcare provider will weigh the benefits and risks of using this medication, and if they decide to prescribe it, the patient will be closely monitored. Some examples include older adults and people with kidney, liver, or bladder problems.
