What is Urso Forte?

Urso Forte is a prescription drug used as the first line of treatment for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC, which used to be called primary biliary cirrhosis).

Primary biliary cholangitis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the bile ducts in the liver and they swell shut, resulting in the bile backing up in the liver. The build-up of bile damages the liver and, because bile is not making it into the digestive system, the resulting lowered calcium absorption results in bone loss (osteoporosis).

The active ingredient in Urso Forte, ursodiol, helps move bile through the liver and so improves liver function and slows the progress of PBC.

Urso Forte is a 500 mg tablet while URSO 250 is half the dose. Urso Forte tablet is scored so that the tablet can be split into two 250 mg doses. The dosage will vary based on the weight of the patient.
