Verquvo is a brand-name prescription drug FDA-approved to treat heart failure. The active ingredient, vericiguat (“very-SEE-gwat”), relaxes blood vessels to reduce blood pressure, decreasing the workload on the heart. Verquvo tablets are taken once daily with food. People who can’t swallow the tablet can crush the tablet and mix it with water.

What is Verquvo used for?

Heart doctors use Verquvo to reduce the risk of death or hospitalization in people with chronic, symptomatic heart failure with an ejection fraction less than 45% (heart failure with reduced ejection fraction). Patients must have been hospitalized or received IV medications for their heart failure symptoms before a doctor will prescribe Verquvo.

How to take Verquvo

  • Take this medication as directed. 

  • Please read the Medication Guide that comes with this medicine.

  • Take one tablet daily with food.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a drink of water.

  • People who are unable to swallow tablets can crush the tablet, mix it with water, and take it that way.

  • Store Verquvo tablets at room temperature.

What to do if you miss a dose of Verquvo

  • Take a missed dose on the same day as the missed dose.

  • Do not take a missed dose the day after it was missed. Skip it and take the next dose as you normally would.

  • Do not take two doses on the same day.

Verquvo contraindications

  • Verquvo is not safe for everyone.

  • Do not take Verquvo if you are:

    • Pregnant.

    • Taking other drugs like Verquvo called soluble guanylate cyclase stimulators.

Verquvo warnings

  • Do not take Verquvo while pregnant.

    • Women of reproductive age will need to be tested for pregnancy before starting Verquvo.

    • Women who can get pregnant will need to use effective birth control while taking Verquvo and continue using birth control up until one month after the last dose is taken.

    • Immediately tell the prescriber if you get pregnant or think you are pregnant.

  • Do not breastfeed when taking Verquvo.

    • Tell the doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Discuss alternative ways to feed the infant.

  • Tell any doctor or other healthcare provider who treats you that you are using this medicine.

  • Keep all healthcare appointments when taking this medicine.

Verquvo interactions

  • Before starting Verquvo, tell the doctor if you are using:

    • Drugs that work the same way as Verquvo called cyclic guanylate cyclase stimulators, such as Adempas (riociguat)

    • Erectile dysfunction or pulmonary hypertension medications called PDE5 inhibitors

  • It is not recommended for people to take Verquvo along with PDE5 inhibitors such as:

    • Viagra or Revatio (sildenafil)

    • Cialis (tadalafil)

    • Levitra (vardenafil)

    • Stendra (avanafil)

Serious side effects

Talk to a doctor if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Hypotension: Dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, blurred vision, fatigue, weakness, trouble thinking, confusion, nausea, vomiting

  • Anemia: Fatigue, weakness, pale skin
