What is Vidaza used for?

Azacitidine is a miscellaneous antineoplastic used to treat patients diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Patients with MDS have abnormal bone marrow that does not produce enough healthy blood cells. Using Azacitidine helps to increase the blood cells count, reducing the number of blood fusion needed. Healthy blood cells reduce the risks of infections such as anemia.

How to take Vidaza

  • Missed dose: Injection routeThis medicine needs to be given on a fixed schedule. If you miss a dose, call your doctor, home health caregiver, or treatment clinic for instructions.

  • A nurse or other trained health professional will give you this medicine. You may also be taught how to give your medicine at home. This medicine is given as a shot under your skin or into a vein.

  • You may also receive medicines to help prevent nausea and vomiting.

  • This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to azacitidine or mannitol, or you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness

  • Swelling in your hands, ankles, feet, or face

  • Skin wound that does not heal or looks infected (red and swollen)

  • Shortness of breath, cold sweat, and bluish skin

  • Seizures or tremors

  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting

  • Pain, redness, or swelling where the shot is given

  • Injection routeThis medicine may cause birth defects if either partner is using it during conception or pregnancy. Tell your doctor right away if you or your partner becomes pregnant.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease (including tumors), or an infection.

  • This medicine may cause tumor lysis syndrome.

  • This medicine may make you bleed, bruise, or get infections more easily. Take precautions to prevent illness and injury. Wash your hands often.

Serious Side Effects

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

  • Change in how much or how often you urinate, painful urination

  • Chest pain, trouble breathing

  • Fever, chills, cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, and body aches

  • Joint pain or stiffness, lower back or side pain, rapid weight gain, swelling in your hands, ankles, feet, or face

  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness

Less Serious Side Effects

  • Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting

  • Pain, redness, or swelling where the shot was given
