What is Zonegran?
Zonegran (zonisamide) is a prescription drug that is taken with other medications to control partial seizures in adults with epilepsy, a nervous system disorder characterized by recurrent seizures.
The active ingredient in Zonegran, zonisamide, belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants. Epileptic seizures are caused by the repetitive, overexcited, and abnormal firing of nerve cells in the brain, usually triggered by a situation or other stimulus. Zonegran prevents the repetitive firing of nerves by reducing the brain's excitability.
Zonegran is taken as a capsule once or twice daily. Before taking Zonegran, talk to your doctor about your medical history and conditions, as well as all of the medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins or supplements. Do not take Zonegran if you are allergic to sulfa drugs.
What are the side effects of Zonegran?
The most common side effects of Zonegran include, but are not limited to, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, loss of coordination, loss of balance, trouble walking, loss of appetite, cough, diarrhea, and blurred vision.
Allergic reactions are extremely rare but include hives, rashes, itching, and trouble breathing. Severe allergic reactions are rare but possible, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a drug reaction that causes a dark rash, blistering, and peeling throughout the body as well as fever, sore throat, and flu-like symptoms. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, get emergency medical help immediately.
Mood and mental changes are possible. These include memory problems, irritability, agitation, and trouble concentrating. In rare cases, some patients who take anticonvulsants may experience depression, suicidal thoughts, or other mood problems. Tell your doctor immediately if you have unusual or sudden changes in your mood, thoughts, or behaviors, including depression or thoughts of harming yourself.
This is not a full list of side effects. Ask your doctor or healthcare professional for a full list of side effects and drug interactions, as well as additional medical advice.
