Zosyn is a brand-name injectable prescription drug used to treat a variety of bacterial infections like stomach infections, skin infections, pneumonia, and severe vaginal infections. Zosyn consists of two drugs, piperacillin and tazobactam. Piperacillin is a broad-spectrum ?-lactam antibiotic (similar to penicillin) while tazobactam is a pharmaceutical drug that inhibits the action of bacterial ?-lactamases, especially those belonging to the SHV-1 and TEM groups.
Before using Zosyn, your doctor will want to ensure that it is safe for you. Tell your doctor if you suffer from kidney disease, a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, low levels of potassium in your blood, cystic fibrosis, a history of allergies, if you are on a low-salt diet, or if you are allergic to a penicillin antibiotic such as amoxicillin, a cephalosporin antibiotic such as cefdinir (Omnicef), cefprozil (Cefzil), cefuroxime (Ceftin), cephalexin (Keflex), ora drug that contains a beta-lactamase inhibitor such as Augmentin.
Once Zosyn has been prescribed for you, your doctor will ensure you receive it for the full prescribed period of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared, however, stopping before the prescribed time can increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. It should be noted that Zosyn will only treat bacterial infections, not viral infections.
Zosyn is supplied as an IV infusion that is injected into a vein. A healthcare provider will administer this medication.
Diarrhea, constipation, nausea, headache, or sleep problems (insomnia) are some of the common side effects of Zosyn.

If you experience symptoms such as hives, a rash, blisters, flulike symptoms, shortness of breath, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or severe diarrhea, seek emergency medical care right away.
