What is Zosyn used for?

Zosyn is a prescription only medication that is used to treat bacterial injections such as urinary tract infections and pneumonia. Zosyn works by destroying harmful bacteria in the body. This medication is available as an Intravenous powder for injection and as an Intravenous solution.

How to take Zosyn

What to do if you miss a dose of Zosyn

Zosyn contraindications

  • This medicine is not right for everyone. You should not receive it if you had an allergic reaction to piperacillin, tazobactam, or similar antibiotic medicines.

Zosyn warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, congestive heart failure, cystic fibrosis, or seizures. Tell your doctor if you have a history of allergies or are on a low-salt diet.

  • This medicine may cause the following problems:Serious skin reactionsBleeding problemsNerve problems, including seizuresKidney problemSevere diarrhea

  • This medicine can cause diarrhea. Call your doctor if the diarrhea becomes severe, does not stop, or is bloody. Do not take any medicine to stop diarrhea until you have talked to your doctor. Diarrhea can occur 2 months or more after you stop taking this medicine. It may occur 2 months or more after you stop using this medicine.

  • Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.

  • Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.

  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

  • Some foods and medicines can affect how piperacillin/tazobactam works. Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following:Methotrexate, probenecidBlood thinner (including heparin, warfarin)Diuretic (water pill)Other medicine to treat an infection (including tobramycin, vancomycin)

  • This medicine may cause the following problems:Bleeding problemsSerious skin reactionsSevere diarrhea

  • This medicine can cause diarrhea. Call your doctor if the diarrhea becomes severe, does not stop, or is bloody. Do not take any medicine to stop diarrhea until you have talked to your doctor. Diarrhea can occur 2 months or more after you stop taking this medicine. It may occur 2 months or more after you stop using this medicine.

  • Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.

Serious Side Effects

  • Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the needle is placed

  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness

  • Seizures

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

  • Blistering, peeling, or red skin rash

  • Bloody or watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever

  • Change in how much or how often you urinate, painful or difficult urination, lower back or side pain

Less Serious Side Effects

  • Pain, itching, burning, swelling, or a lump under your skin where the needle is placed

  • Headache, trouble sleeping

  • Mild diarrhea, constipation, nausea
