What is Latuda?

Latuda (lurasidone) is an atypical antipsychotic approved to treat bipolar depression and schizophrenia. Latuda is believed to work by blocking certain serotonin and dopamine receptors in the brain. By balancing the activity of these neurotransmitters, Latuda may help improve symptoms of bipolar depression and schizophrenia.  

What doses of Latuda are available?

Latuda oral tablets are available in strengths of 20 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg, 80 mg, and 120 mg. The starting dosage is usually one 20 mg or 40 mg tablet by mouth daily, depending on the condition being treated. The exact dosage of Latuda can vary. 

Latuda should be taken with food (at least 350 calories), as food improves the absorption of the drug into the body. However, avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking Latuda, as it can increase the likelihood of experiencing some side effects. 

Do not take more or less of Latuda than prescribed, even if you feel better. Do not suddenly stop taking Latuda without instructions from your healthcare provider. Always take Latuda according to your healthcare provider’s instructions. 

What are the side effects of Latuda?

Some common side effects of Latuda may include dizziness, anxiety, weakness, tiredness, restlessness, uncontrollable shaking, nausea, vomiting, appetite changes, menstrual irregularities, and sexual problems. Call your healthcare provider if side effects persist or worsen. 

Serious side effects of Latuda may include low blood pressure when rising from a lying or sitting position (orthostatic hypotension), high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia), neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), uncontrollable movements (tardive dyskinesia), low white blood cell counts, seizures, increased prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia), falls, body temperature problems, and manic episodes. 

Antipsychotic drugs, such as Latuda, may increase the risk of death in older patients with dementia-related psychosis. The use of Latuda should be avoided in patients with dementia-related psychosis.

Latuda may cause or worsen suicidal thoughts or behaviors, especially in children or adolescents. People who take Latuda should be closely monitored for changes in mood or behavior or suicidal thoughts.

What can you not take with Latuda?

Before taking Latuda, tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and natural products like vitamins or supplements. 

If you take any of the following drugs or supplements, you should not take Latuda:

  • Carbamazepine 

  • Clarithromycin

  • Ketoconazole

  • Phenytoin 

  • Rifampin 

  • Ritonavir 

  • St. John’s wort

  • Voriconazole

If you take any of the following drugs, you will likely need a dosage adjustment of Latuda:

  • Atazanavir 

  • Bosentan 

  • Diltiazem

  • Efavirenz 

  • Erythromycin 

  • Etravirine 

  • Fluconazole

  • Modafinil 

  • Nafcillin 

  • Verapamil

Does Latuda make you gain weight?

Like other antipsychotics, Latuda may cause weight gain. In addition, Latuda may increase blood sugar and cholesterol levels, which are also linked to weight gain. You may need to monitor your weight and tell your healthcare provider if you've gained a significant amount of weight while taking Latuda. Weight gain may worsen complications of diabetes and increase the risk of heart disease.
