What is the generic of Wegovy?

Wegovy is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Novo Nordisk. The medication in Wegovy is semaglutide, which is the same active ingredient as brand-name Ozempic. Ozempic is indicated for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, and Wegovy is prescribed for weight loss. There are no generic versions available of either semaglutide medication at this time.

Can Wegovy be prescribed for weight loss?

Wegovy is specifically approved for weight loss in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher (obese) or 27 or higher (overweight) with at least one weight-related condition such as hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia. It is intended for use as part of a treatment plan that includes a lower-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

In one clinical trial, patients using Wegovy achieved an average weight loss of 14.9% of their initial body weight over a 68-week period.

Getting a Wegovy prescription requires a consultation with a healthcare professional who will evaluate if it's suitable based on your health needs and medical history.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Wegovy?

Wegovy alternatives include:

  • Saxenda (liraglutide) is a weight-loss medication in the same drug class. While Wegovy is a once-weekly injection or once-daily pill, Saxenda is a daily injection. Generic Saxenda is now available, so it may be the most affordable Wegovy alternative.

  • Zepbound (tirzepatide) is a similar drug that is a once-weekly injection approved for weight loss.

  • Healthcare providers may prescribe other GLP-1 agonists off-label for weight loss, such as Ozempic. However, insurance may not always cover the cost of these drugs if they are not prescribed according to their stated indication.

  • There are less expensive oral medications that may be prescribed for weight loss, and each has its own set of indications and possible side effects. If you are interested in Wegovy alternatives, consult your healthcare provider to determine the appropriate medication for you.

Lifestyle interventions, such as changes in diet and increased physical activity, are recommended in conjunction with any type of weight loss medication.

What is Wegovy used for?

Wegovy is a prescription medication approved to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or strokes, in adults with established heart disease and either obesity or overweight. It is also used for weight management in adults and children aged 12 and older who are either obese or overweight.

As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, Wegovy is intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to promote and maintain weight loss. Wegovy works by activating glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors in the body.

Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?

Ozempic and Wegovy both contain the active ingredient semaglutide. However, Ozempic is approved for controlling blood sugar levels in adults with Type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is approved for weight management.

Wegovy can deliver a higher maximum weekly dose of semaglutide (2.4 mg) than Ozempic (2 mg).

Wegovy is now also available in pill form, whereas Ozempic is only available as an injection.

Many healthcare providers still prescribe Ozempic off-label (non-FDA-approved) for weight loss.

Is Wegovy safe?

Wegovy is FDA-approved for adults and children 12 years of age and older with obesity as well as adults who are overweight with at least one weight-related health condition (high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol).

Common side effects of Wegovy include:

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

  • Vomiting

  • Abdominal pain

  • Headache

These side effects may lessen or go away as you get used to the medication. If these side effects persist or are bothersome, consult your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Wegovy has a black box warning, which is the most serious warning required by the FDA. This type of medication has caused thyroid cancer in animal studies. It is unknown whether this medication causes thyroid tumors in humans. Patients who take Wegovy should be aware of symptoms of thyroid cancer, which may include hoarseness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a lump in the neck. People with a history or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or individuals with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) should not take Wegovy.

Serious allergic reactions are rare. If you experience symptoms of hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical attention.

Other serious side effects, including pancreas, gallbladder, and kidney problems, may occur. Patients who take Wegovy should also be monitored for mood changes and suicidal thoughts.

This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for more information about Wegovy's side effects.

Are there any Wegovy-drug interactions?

Wegovy, in combination with insulin or certain diabetes medications (glipizide, glyburide, or glimepiride), can increase the risk of low blood sugar. If the combination is prescribed together, a dosage adjustment of the insulin or oral diabetes drug may be required. It may be recommended to monitor blood glucose levels closely.

Because Wegovy affects stomach emptying, it can affect the absorption of medicines taken by mouth. Ask your healthcare provider if you need to space your oral medications when taking Wegovy.

This is not a full list of drug interactions, and others may occur. Before taking Wegovy, tell your healthcare provider about your medications, including prescription drugs, OTC medicines, and vitamins or supplements.
