What is Akynzeo?

Akynzeo is a medication prescribed to adults (in combination with a steroid medicine called dexamethasone) to relieve nausea due to cancer chemotherapy. Akynzeo is available in two formulations. The oral capsule form contains the active ingredients netupitant and palonosetron. The injection form contains the active ingredients fosnetupitant and palonosetron. Netupitant and fosnetupitant are classified as substance P/neurokinin-1 receptor antagonists, and palonosetron is a serotonin receptor antagonist.

Akynzeo works by blocking substances in the body and brain that cause nausea and vomiting.

Akynzeo is administered as a capsule (netupitant and palonosetron) or intravenous injection (fosnetupitant and palonosetron). The capsule is administered one hour before chemotherapy and the intravenous injection 30 minutes before chemotherapy.

What are the side effects of Akynzeo?

Common adverse effects of Akynzeo include but are not limited to, headache, weakness, fatigue, constipation, and indigestion. 

Allergic reactions are not common but can be severe and life-threatening. Patients who have symptoms of an allergic reaction, including hives, swelling, or trouble breathing, should get emergency medical attention.

Are there any known interactions with Akynzeo?

  • Xanax (alprazolam)

  • Certain chemotherapy drugs

  • Rifampin 

  • Nizoral (ketoconazole)

  • Concomitant use of medicines that increase serotonin levels—including SSRI antidepressants such as Lexapro (escitalopram) or SNRI antidepressants such as Cymbalta (duloxetine)—cause an increased risk of serotonin syndrome, a life-threatening condition caused by the buildup of excess serotonin

How often can you take Akynzeo?

Akynzeo in oral capsule form is taken as one capsule by mouth one hour before chemotherapy, along with a corticosteroid medicine called dexamethasone. 

If given by intravenous infusion, Akynzeo is given as a one-time dose starting 30 minutes before chemotherapy and infused over 30 minutes. It is also given along with dexamethasone.
