What is Amoxicillin-Clavulanate used for?

Amoxicillin-pot-clavulanate is a commonly prescribed antibiotic used to treat certain types of bacterial infections in adults and children. It does not treat infections caused by a virus, such as the common cold or flu.

Key takeaways

  • Take this medicine as directed. Do not stop taking this medicine before your treatment is complete. Doing so can cause the infection to come back and can contribute to antibiotic resistance.

  • Take each dose at the beginning of a meal. This helps reduce stomach discomfort.

  • If your child is taking the liquid form, store it in the refrigerator. Shake well before measuring each dose with a medicine measuring device. Do not use kitchen measuring devices, as they are not as accurate.

  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at your regularly scheduled time.

  • If you have any symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling, get emergency medical help right away.
