Insulin degludec-liraglutide is the generic name of Xultophy. Presently, there is no generic version of Xultophy for sale.
Xultophy is a prescription drug that is available as an injection. It is used along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Xultophy is a combination medication that contains both insulin degludec and liraglutide as active ingredients.
Before using Xultophy, you should talk with your healthcare provider to see if this medication will be the right medication to help control your blood sugar levels. It is not recommended for patients with Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis to use this drug. Healthcare providers often recommend that patients use Xultophy with a balanced diet and physical activity.
Commonly reported side effects of Xultophy include injection site reactions, headache, diarrhea or constipation, nausea, indigestion, gas, and stomach pain.
Serious side effects can also occur, such as hypokalemia (low potassium levels), pancreatitis, kidney problems or kidney failure, and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), among others. There is an increased risk of heart failure if you also take Actos (pioglitazone).
In rare cases, Xultophy may also cause allergic reaction symptoms such as hives, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you have any of these symptoms, get emergency medical help.
For more information and a full list of side effects, consult your physician.
You should not take Xultophy if you are allergic to any ingredient in the medicine. Others who should not take Xultophy include:
People with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2
People with a history or family history of MTC (medullary thyroid carcinoma)
People with Type 1 diabetes
Anyone who is having low blood sugar or who is in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
In animal studies, liraglutide, one of the components of Xultophy, caused thyroid cancer. It is not known if this potential risk can occur in people. While taking Xultophy, be alert to signs of a thyroid tumor. Call your healthcare provider immediately if you have shortness of breath, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or a lump in the neck.
