Aristada Initio is a brand-name prescription injection with the active ingredient, aripiprazole lauroxil, a long-acting version of aripirazole, the active ingredient in Abilify. Aristada Initio uses a different formulation of aripiprazole lauroxil than Aristada to allow for immediate initiation of aripiprazole treatment. There are no brand-name or generic alternatives to Aristada Initio.
Aristada Initio is a brand-name prescription injection used to control both the psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations (false perceptions) and delusions (false beliefs), as well as the negative symptoms, such as apathy, loss of social interest, lack of motivation, and so on.
The active ingredient in Aristada, aripiprazole lauroxil, is a long-acting version of aripiprazole, an antipsychotic drug that is the active ingredient in Abilify. Aripiprazole requires a daily oral dose. Because patient compliance with taking medicines is one of the major obstacles in treating schizophrenia, Aristada is intended to be administered as a single intramuscular injection every 30 days, every six weeks, or every two months depending on the dose.
However, Aristada can only be started after a patient has undergone at least 30 days of taking oral aripiprozole. Aristada Initio, however, is a different formulation of aripiprazole lauroxil that allows a patient to begin Aristada treatment immediately without first taking oral aripiprazole. Aristada Initio is given as a single intramuscular injection along with one tablet of aripiprazole. The first Aristada shot can be given on the same day but no later than ten days after Aristada Initio has been administered. Aristada Initio is also used to “restart” a patient on Aristada if a dose has been missed.
Aristada Initio is administered by a healthcare professional in a clinical or hospital setting. It is not available for purchase at consumer pharmacies.
The active ingredient in Aristada Initio is aripiprazole lauroxil. When Aristada Initio is injected, the patient also receives a single oral dose of aripiprazole and, sometimes, an injection of Aristada, a different formulation of aripiprazole lauroxil. For this reason, the side effects of Aristada Initio are may result from either the injection or the oral dose of aripiprazole.
The most common side effects of Aristada Initio are injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling), an overwhelming urge to move around, restlessness, muscle spasms, quivering, headache, weight gain, and insomnia. Mental and mood changes include anxiety and suicidal thoughts.
Allergic reactions are rare and may include anaphylaxis, a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
Serious but very rare side effects of Aristada treatment include tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled movements), low blood pressure, seizures, stroke, cognitive impairment, motor impairment, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a rare but potentially fatal side effect of taking antipsychotic drugs.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Consult with your physician about any concerns you may have with side effects.
