Atacand is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that is used to treat hypertension in adults and in children who are at least 1 year old. Atacand can also be used to treat certain types of heart failure, to reduce serious complications or death due to heart damage. This prescription drug works by keeping blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.
To make sure Atacand is right for you, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis), liver disease, heart problems, if you are on a low-salt diet, or if you are dehydrated.
You should not take Atacand if you have diabetes, kidney disease, or if you are taking any Atacand containing aliskiren. Additionally, your doctor should be informed about all drugs that you are currently taking including prescription, over-the-counter, herbal drugs, and vitamin supplements.
