Beyfortus is a Antiviral Monoclonal Antibodies class medication. Beyfortus is FDA-approved to prevent RSV lower respiratory tract disease in:
Newborns and infants born during—or entering—their first RSV season
Children up to 24 months old who are at risk for severe RSV disease through their second RSV season
Beyfortus is administered as an injection into a muscle by a healthcare provider.
Common side effects of Beyfortus include rash and injection site reactions.
In rare cases, a serious side effect may occur. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help.
Beyfortus should not be given to an infant or child with a history of serious allergic reactions to nirsevimab (the ingredient in Beyfortus) or any ingredients in Beyfortus.
Beyfortus is not considered to be a traditional vaccine. Rather, it is classified as a long-acting monoclonal antibody used to protect infants against severe RSV disease.
There are two RSV monoclonal antibody medications that can be used to prevent severe RSV disease—Beyfortus and Synagis.
Beyfortus can be given to all infants younger than 8 months old who were born during RSV season or entering their first RSV season. Most babies younger than 8 months do not need to receive a Beyfortus injection if they were born 2 weeks or more after their mother received an RSV vaccine. The Abrysvo RSV vaccine can be given during weeks 32 through 36 of pregnancy to prevent severe RSV disease in infants. Beyfortus can also be given to infants ages 8 to 19 months who are at increased risk for severe RSV disease and are entering their second RSV season. One injection of Beyfortus lasts through the entire season.
Synagis can only be given to children under 24 months who are at high risk for severe RSV disease due to certain conditions. It must be administered once a month during RSV season.
Talk to your child’s healthcare provider for medical advice about the best way to prevent RSV. You can also find more information on RSV on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.
