Is there a generic of Biotrue?
Biotrue is an over-the-counter brand-name contact cleaning and storage solution from Bausch + Lomb. Contacts solution is available in a range of branded products, such as Opti-Free, and generic products, such as Up & Up and Equate. These products, however, do not include hyaluronan, a moistening agent that helps the lenses stay moist in the eye for a longer time.
What is Biotrue?
Biotrue is a sterile soft contact lens cleaning and storage solution that contains saline and hyaluronan as the lubricating agents. Hyaluronan, which is a gel-like substance secreted by the eye, greatly increases the ability of the eye to keep the lens moist over a long period when it is absorbed into the lens.
Biotrue is marketed as a solution that preserves intact antibodies (proteins) on the surface of the lens while removing denatured proteins from the lens. Biotrue also helps to remove particles on the surface of the lens that may irritate. The disinfecting agents in Biotrue are polyquaternium and polyaminopropyl biguanide, preservatives that are commonly found in contact lens cleaning solutions, storage solutions, and rewetting drops.
Put three drops of Biotrue on each side of the contact lens and rub the lens between your fingers for 20 seconds. Flush the lens with the solution and place it in a container with fresh solution. Replace Biotrue 90 days after it has been opened to prevent possible infection.
What are the side effects of Biotrue?
Most people who use Biotrue experience no or minimal side effects. Common side effects of Biotrue are usually minor and temporary and involve site reactions on the surface of the eye. They include burning, stinging, irritation, blurred vision, redness, dry eye, and watering of the eye for a short period after the contact lenses are put in the eye. If these symptoms continue, remove the contact lenses from your eyes.
Allergic reactions to the preservatives are rare but can be swelling, redness, eye pain, and anaphylaxis, a sudden and dangerous drop in blood pressure. Again, remove the lenses at any sign of an allergic reaction to Biotrue.
