What is Claritin?

Claritin is an FDA-approved OTC allergy medicine. It provides 24-hour relief to a number of allergy symptoms and chronic skin reactions. These include sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, itchy nose, itchy eyes, watery eyes, rashes, hives, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), and itching. Claritin allergy also provides non-drowsy allergy relief to those who suffer from pet dander, pollen, and seasonal allergies. Loratadine is the generic version of this allergy medication.

What doses of Claritin are available?

Claritin is available in 10 mg oral and chewable tablets, reditabs and liqui-gels. Non-drowsy children's Claritin is also available in the form of syrup in 5 mg/5 mL strength in 12 and 24 hours. Claritin should not be given to children younger than two years of age.

What are the side effects of Claritin?

Common side effects of Claritin in children ages two to 12 years old include diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, fatigue, upper respiratory tract infection, abdominal pain, wheezing, and nervousness.

Adults and children over 12 years of age may also experience headaches, nervousness, and drowsiness or fatigue.

This medication can also cause drowsiness, hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, and throat. Contact a healthcare professional and seek immediate medical help if you experience these or other symptoms after taking Claritin or if your allergy symptoms worsen.
