Coartem a combination prescription drug that treats malaria, a potentially life-threatening parasite infection of the blood. Malaria is caused by a single-cell parasite that feeds on and destroys red blood cells. Symptoms are severe and, in the later stages of the disease, can be life-threatening. One to three million people a year die from malaria.
Coartem combines two active ingredients: artemether and lumefantrine. When the artemether is absorbed into the parasite, it promotes the creation of chemicals toxic to the parasite. Lumefantrine prevents the parasite from copying its own DNA and producing more malaria parasites.
Coartem is a tablet taken daily for three days.
The most common side effects of Coartem include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, feeling tired, fever, chills, muscle pain, joint pain, abdominal pain, chest pain, fast heartbeat, and insomnia.
