Culturelle is a brand-name family of probiotic supplements for adults, children, and infants. Culturelle supplements are intended to promote gastrointestinal health, support the immune system, or rebuild the body's “good” bacteria after antibiotic therapy. Culturelle supplements contain various cultures of “good” bacteria depending on the product.
Many Culturelle products can additional ingredients, such as multivitamins, vitamin D, fiber, or chamomile. Many Culturelle supplements are formulated to be free of animal products.
Culturelle is taken as capsules, chewable tablets, gummies (for children), and drops (for infants).
What are the side effects of Culturelle?
Common side effects of Culturelle include, but are not limited to, gas, bloating, constipation, and thirst, but these usually subside within a day. While not an allergic reaction, the body sometimes reacts to the live bacteria by releasing histamines to fight off what the body thinks is an infection. Histamines cause the symptoms of allergic reactions.
Side effects of additional active ingredients such as vitamins, fiber, or chamomile will depend on the ingredient. Side effects and allergies to vitamins are rare, but fiber can cause diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Chamomile (contained in Culturelle infant drops) may cause severe allergic reactions.
