What is Debacterol?

Debacterol is an over-the-counter topical solution for relieving and accelerating the healing of canker sores, which are small white sores that periodically appear in the soft tissues of the mouth or gums. Canker sores can be painful and make eating and drinking difficult.

The active ingredients in Debacterol are sulfonated phenolics and sulfuric acid, which belong to a class of drugs called chemical cauterizing agents. These are substances that burn the affected area and so provide pain relief and faster healing.

Debacterol is applied to the surface of the canker sore using a swab for 10 seconds. The area is then flushed with water to prevent further burning of the soft tissue. Debacterol is more effective on the driest areas of the mouth and may not work well in areas with a lot of saliva, such as the tongue. Most patients will not receive a prescription for Debacterol, but have it applied by a dentist or other healthcare professional.

Debacterol has not been approved by the FDA as safe and effective, although it is allowed for prescription sale as a “pre-amendment drug.”

What are the side effects of Debacterol?

The active ingredients in Debacterol, sulfonated phenolics and sulfuric acid, are powerful corrosives and easily damage skin and other tissue. The most common side effects, then, are site reactions such as intense burning, redness, and discomfort. Serious side effects only occur if Debacterol is improperly applied or the patient is allergic to sulfonated phenolics. Improper application can cause severe burns on the area affected, whether in the mouth, skin, or eyes. Accidental inhalation can damage the sinuses, esophagus, or lungs. Swallowing Debacterol could cause burns in the throat or esophagus. If rinsing with water does not stop the burning, rinse with a solution of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to neutralize the acid.
