What is Chloraseptic?

Chloraseptic is a group of over-the-counter medications that provide fast-acting sore throat relief. The active ingredient in Chloraseptic products is benzocaine. This medication works by blocking nerve signals in your body to reduce pain and discomfort caused by a sore throat.

Chloraseptic comes in the form of flavored Chloraseptic lozenges and Chloraseptic sore throat sprays. Lozenges can be taken once every two hours or as needed. As the lozenges slowly dissolve in your mouth, the medication is absorbed by your body and begins to work to reduce irritation caused by a sore throat. Chloraseptic spray can also be used once every two hours and should be sprayed directly into the mouth, allowed to settle for 15 seconds, and then spit out.

Consult your doctor before allowing the use of this medication by children under 12 years of age. The FDA has recommended that caregivers of children under two years of age should consult with their doctors before giving products containing benzocaine as it may lead to adverse health effects.

What are the side effects of Chloraseptic?

Chloraseptic is usually safe and easy to use, however, some unwanted side effects may occur. These may include hives, itching, mouth irritation, rash, and redness of the skin. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you develop any of these side effects, especially if they persist or worsen.

In extremely rare cases, the use of this medication may lead to a health condition known as Methemoglobinemia. This condition usually occurs due to exposure to benzocaine.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Other effects not listed here may also occur while you are taking this medication. Check with your healthcare provider for complete medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Chloraseptic.
