What is Dermoplast?

Dermoplast is an over-the-counter topical spray for minor skin injuries and comes in two formulas. Dermoplast Pain & Itch Spray is a local anesthetic that relieves the discomfort of minor cuts, scrapes, first degree burns, insect bites, and sunburns. Dermoplast First Aid Spray is a topical antiseptic and local anesthetic that kills bacteria and viruses on the surface of a minor cut, scrape, or first degree burns, and relieves pain in the affected area.

The active ingredients in Dermoplast are benzethonium chloride and benzocaine. Benzethonium chloride is a powerful and widely-used antiseptic agent that kills most bacteria and viruses. Benzocaine belongs to a class of drugs called local anesthetics which numbs the tissues by shutting down nerve signals, temporarily relieving pain at the site of the wound or burn.

What are the side effects of Dermoplast?

Some but not all common side effects of Dermoplast are primarily site reactions to the active or inactive ingredients and include stinging, burning, itching, redness, tenderness, or dry, white flakes on the skin. Allergic reactions are rare. Because Dermoplast is applied to open wounds, small amounts of the benzethonium chloride or benzocaine in Dermoplast can enter the bloodstream and cause rare side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, or uneven heart rate.

Serious side effects only occur if Dermoplast is seriously misused. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. Benzocaine is absorbed through the skin and overuse of benzocaine topical drugs can cause serious side effects, such as uneven heart rate, seizures, breathing problems, and death. Even so, do not ingest Dermoplast, use it in or near the mouth, use it on deep cuts or serious burns, or use it extensively on the body. It is intended for use on a small area of the skin as a one-time remedy for minor skin problems only. Keep out of reach of children.
