Donnatal is a combination medicine containing belladonna alkaloids and phenobarbital. Belladonna alkaloids helps to reduce muscle spasms in the digestive or urinary tract, and reduce fluid secretions from certain glands or organs. Phenobarbital acts on the brain and nervous system to slow its activity. It is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome and ulcers in the intestine.

You should not use this medicine if you have hiatal hernia or certain intestinal problems, such as a blockage in your bowels, or if you have severe colitis (inflammation of the bowel) that has caused ulcers.

Make sure your doctor knows if you have heart problems or high blood pressure, or if you have hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland).
