What is Donnatal?

Donnatal is a combination drug used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other digestive issues, such as enterocolitis and duodenal ulcers. It contains a barbiturate drug called phenobarbital and belladonna alkaloids called hyoscyamine, atropine, and scopolamine. The combination of these drugs provides anticholinergic, antispasmodic, and sedative effects. Donnatal may help relieve digestive issues by slowing down the natural movements of the gut and relaxing the muscles in the stomach and intestines.

Donnatal comes in two formulations: an immediate-release oral tablet and an elixir. It is typically prescribed in addition to other medications or treatments.

Donnatal should not be used in people who have glaucoma, obstructive uropathy, obstructive disease of the gastrointestinal tract, paralytic ileus, unstable cardiovascular status, severe ulcerative colitis, myasthenia gravis, hiatal hernia with reflux esophagitis, or known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in Donnatal.
