What is Efavirenz?

Efavirenz is used along with other HIV medications to help control HIV infection. This medication helps to reduce the amount of HIV in your body, which allows your immune system to work better. This also decreases your chances of getting HIV-related complications such as cancer, pneumonia, and other infections. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). This medication is not a cure for HIV.

Take this oral capsule by mouth on an empty stomach, without food, usually once daily at bedtime. Taking Efavirenz with food increased the blood level of this medication, which may increase your risk of certain side effects. Swallow this medication whole with water. Do not eat any food for two hours after using this medication. For babies who are unable to eat solid food, the contents may be mixed in two teaspoons of infant formula and drawn up into an oral syringe to be given to the baby.
