Memantine is a prescription drug used to treat Alzheimer’s dementia. While it isn’t a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, it can help improve your ability to think and remember things.
Memantine comes in an immediate-release oral tablet, oral solution, and extended-release (ER) oral capsule. The tablet and solution are usually taken twice daily, while the ER capsule is taken once daily. Your healthcare provider will likely start you on a low dosage and change the dosage slowly over time until your symptoms are appropriately managed and side effects are minimized.
The most common side effects of Memantine are dizziness, headache, confusion, and gastrointestinal issues such as constipation and diarrhea. Memantine may also cause serious side effects. These include severe allergic reactions, anxiety, depression, and changes in blood pressure. Other potential side effects have occurred since the Memantine was approved on the market, however, it’s unknown how often these side effects occurred or whether they were caused by the Memantine.
