Entyvio is a prescription drug used to treat patients with certain bowel disorders, such as moderate to severe ulcerative colitis and moderate to severe Crohn's disease. When you have either of these conditions, your body's immune system can attack healthy tissues in the digestive tract, which results in symptoms such as abdominal pain, blood in the stool, and diarrhea. Entyvio belongs to the drug class known as monoclonal antibodies.
Entyvio works by blocking the action of integrin (a natural substance) in the gut. Integrin is a protein that helps move white blood cells to the gut to fight inflammation from ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. White blood cells are overproduced in these conditions, which leads to excessive inflammation. Entyvio helps to reduce overall swelling, or inflammation, in the gut and prevent damage from these bowel disorders. Entyvio is not meant to be used by patients who are younger than 18 years old.
Before using Entyvio tell your doctor if you have liver problems, tuberculosis (TB), or other active infections. You also need to tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including all prescription medications, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements. If you are scheduled to receive any live vaccines, or if you are using medications like adalimumab (Humira) or infliximab (Remicade), you should also tell your doctor.
You should only use Entyvio as prescribed by your doctor. Entyvio is injected into a vein (intravenous) through an IV infusion. Your healthcare provider will administer this IV infusion in an outpatient setting, which could take about 30 minutes to complete. After the first dose, you will receive a second dose two weeks later and then another dose six weeks after that. After the third dose, Entyvio is given as directed by your doctor, usually every eight weeks. It may take weeks before you begin to see an improvement in symptoms.
The most common side effects of Entyvio include headaches, fatigue, join pain, nausea, back pain, rash, and itching. Entyvio may also cause cough, sore throat, fever, and upper respiratory tract infections.
You could also experience rare side effects when using Entyvio, such as liver problems. Signs and symptoms of liver injury may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and jaundice. If you experience these symptoms while using Entyvio, contact your healthcare provider right away.
